Contact Lens Do’s and Don’ts

Do

Always wash your hands with soap before handling contact lenses!

  1. Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace the case at a minimum of every three months. Clean the case after each use with warm water, and keep it open to dry between cleanings.

  2. Use only products recommended by your optometrist to clean and disinfect your lenses. Saline solution and rewetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.

  3. Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never re-use old solution.

  4. Always follow the recommended contact lens replacement schedule prescribed by your optometrist

  5. Remove the contact lenses and consult your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge, or swelling.

Don’t

  1. Do not use cream soaps to clean contact lenses. Cream soaps can leave a film on the hands that can be transferred to the lenses.

  2. Never put contact lenses in the mouth or moisten them with saliva, which is full of bacteria and a potential source of infection.

  3. Don't use tap water or homemade saline solutions. Improper use of solutions has been linked to a potentially blinding condition among soft lens wearers.

  4. Never use contacts that have not been prescribed by an eye doctor. Contact lens wearing is not an option for everyone; always consult with your eye doctor to see if it's an appropriate option.

  5. Never wear contacts in a swimming pool or hot tub. Doing this greatly increases risk for eye infection.

  6. Do not use lenses for longer than their intended duration period. Extended use may cause protein build up on contact, which can lead to eye infection.

Tips

  • Put on soft contact lenses before applying makeup and remove lenses before removing makeup

  • Put on rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses after makeup is applied.

  • Avoid lash-extending mascara, which has fibers that can irritate the eyes, and waterproof mascara, which cannot be easily removed with water and may stain soft contact lenses.

  • Choose an oil-free moisturizer.

  • Don’t use hand creams or lotions before handling contacts. They can leave a film on your lenses.

  • Use hairspray before putting on your contacts. If you use hairspray while you are wearing your contacts, close your eyes during spraying and for a few seconds afterwards.
